MURRAY HILL, NJ/SNEZHINSK, RUSSIA … The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in cooperation with Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, has approved funding for a project to adopt Advent, Inc.'s systems development methodology as a part of its Nuclear Cities Initiative (NCI) in the Ural Mountains of Russia.
Strela, a company formed as part of the NCI, will work with Advent to produce the next generation of Advent's project management tool, PRIME. Strela is located in the city of Snezhinsk, one of three closed cities dedicated to the design, development and support of Russia's nuclear stockpile. At the conclusion of the Cold War, Russia's Ministry of Atomic Energy (MinAtom) downsized its nuclear weapons program, displacing some of the top scientific minds in the country.
Since 1998, the Nuclear Cities Initiative has employed many of these scientists. The goal of the NCI is to expand civilian industry throughout the Ural region. In its effort to locate and apply the best practices in commercial systems development, the NCI has sought companies such as Advent for consultation and partnership.
PRIME is a web-based system that enables Advent to communicate in real time with its clients – no matter where they are located. PRIME provides a centralized location for project task lists, business use cases, test scripts, change requests, resource timesheets, release notes, impact reports and general project communications. By synchronizing development efforts with client expectations, PRIME allows Advent to provide its clients with an unparalleled level of transparency and accountability.
The PRIME project represents the culmination of this search, and the first phase of an exciting new alliance between Advent and Strela. Strela specializes in business, engineering and scientific computing. From genome analysis and neutron cancer therapy to animation graphics and custom programming, Strela is pioneering a new spirit of industry in Russia.
In its affiliation with the NCI and Strela, Advent joins the ranks of such companies as Boeing, Intel and Veritas currently working in the Ural Mountain region. "We're building a partnership that we hope will be mutually profitable and also beneficial to the relationship between our two countries," commented Carl D'Emilio, President of Advent. "This is globalization of the very highest order."
Advent initially developed its PRIME system as a way of facilitating the product readiness and quality assurance phases of its development projects. The tool has since expanded to encompass all aspects of Advent's streamlined methodology. Through a combination of niche expertise within the shipping industry and disciplined adherence to its core principles, Advent has thrived in lean times. As a result, companies both within and outside of its target industries are keenly interested in Advent's processes and in products such as PRIME.
Headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., Advent, Inc. is an international leader in software development focused on building IT solutions for the transportation industry. Advent provides services in the fields of mission-critical system development, project management, EDI Services and IT outsourcing.
